Caring for your sea glass jewellery

Over time silver can become tarnished due to oxidising.

Should your piece develop a tarnish it's simple to remove and resort to it's former glory.

To clean silver, use a non-abrasive cloth made for cleaning jewellery. These cloths are impregnated with a jewellery cleaner.  Don't worry if your sea glass and silver becomes badly tarnished and the tarnish stains the sea glass.

After gently using the cloth on the silver, the piece can be gently washed in warm soapy water to remove any grime from the sea glass.  Either pat dry or allow to dry naturally then apply a little baby oil to the sea glass, this will intensify the colour of the sea glass and lose the frosted appearance of the sea glass. If you want to restore the frostiness do not apply the oil after cleaning.

Preventative steps to prevent tarnish.
  • Clean your jewellery regularly is one way to avoid tarnish, another is to wear it often.
  • Don't expose it to household chemicals, hair products, perfumes and cosmetics.
  • don't wear your silver jewellery in the swimming pooler in the sea as these take their toll on fine jewellery.
  • store your jewellery separately, to prevent scratches from other jewellery.  There are products you can buy to store with your jewellery to help prevent tarnish. For example Town Talk sell strips that you place in with your jewellery in a sealed bag.
